Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cerakote?
Cerakote is a ceramic based finish that can be applied to metals, plastics, polymers and wood. The unique formulation used for Cerakote ceramic coating enhances a number of physical performance properties including abrasion/wear resistance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, impact strength, and hardness. Each of these properties is rigorously tested to guarantee that Cerakote products remain at the fore-front of the ceramic coatings market. Cerakote ceramic coatings utilize state-of-the-art technology to out-perform any competitive coating in both laboratory settings and real world applications. For more information please visit the Cerakote Link at the top of the page.
When can I use my newly coated or engraved item?
As soon as you receive your item back from us. All of our finishes are fully cured when they are shipped back to you.
What kind of turn around time is expected
Our turnaround time can depend on many factors. Special order colors, stencils, and seasonal runs will affect our turnaround time. Most jobs, with the exception of themed and intricate finishes will be completed within two to three weeks of receiving the item. We will always keep you informed of any delays we encounter.
Do I need to ship through an FFL?
All shipping of serialized and non-serialized parts can be handled through us because we are a licensed FFL manufacturer / dealer. FFL number: 9-81-xxx-xx-xx-03469 FFL EZ Check. We are happy to provide a FILE copy of our FFL to you or your shipping source when requested. For serialized parts and complete firearms, we are required to ship it back to the address that is listed on your government issued ID (i.e. driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.) that you provide. When shipping these types of items, please include a legible copy of your chosen form of identification. For non-serialized parts, you ship it directly to us, and we can ship them back to anyone or anywhere you specify. It is required by law that a person that does not possess a valid FFL, must ship handguns by 2nd day air with a contract carrier (UPS, FEDEX, etc.). Long guns can be shipped with ground service by the USPS or a contract carrier. We will primarily use insured USPS for return shipping mainly because of cost of service.
Will Cerakote work on older parts?
You bet it will. It makes old worn items look amazing, and prevents any further deterioration. Cerakote won't restore metal that is pitted to a smooth finish, but with proper application, it will adhere fully and dramatically improve the appearance while stopping rust in its tracks for good. As it is more durable than most other finishes, it will only improve the resilience of a cleaner model.
What materials can cerakote be applied to?
Cerakote can be applied to most substrates including but not limited to: Aluminum, steel, titanium, brass, copper, chrome plating, glass, polymers, plastics, wood, and even some fabrics! Depending on the series used, baking may or may not be required allowing items and materials that cannot be oven cured to still be coated. The H series and Elite series can be baked at lower temps on a longer cycle as needed. C series is the air cured version good for fabrics, plastics, temperature sensitive materials, electronics etc.
What is the difference between Cerakote and powder coat?
Unlike powder coat, Cerakote is an extremely thin coating. It is applied at only 1-2 mils thick, which has several advantages. It will not negatively affect the tolerances of tight-fitting items, it will not chip or flake off of the item that is being coated. Between the media blasting that is done prior and the ultra-thin coating, virtually no thickness is added. In addition, Cerakote has a higher tolerance to heat and will not discolor when high temps are reached.
How much does it cost?
The cost of Cerakote and laser engraving/etching varies by the project. For an accurate quote, please send an email or call us.
